Privacy

This site does not collect anything about you. No accounts, no analytics, no tracking, no cookies, and nothing you type is sent anywhere.

That is unusual enough to be worth explaining rather than asserting, so the rest of this page sets out exactly what happens when you use the checker, and the one thing that does get recorded, which is outside our control.

What happens when you answer the questions

Everything the checker does happens in your browser. The rules it works from are files downloaded to your device, and your answers are compared against them there. Your answers are never transmitted, and there is no server that could receive them even if they were.

That includes the box you can type into when the place you publish isn’t on our list. Whatever you type is used once, to word your result, and is gone the moment you close the tab.

The address bar

Once you have picked something, your answers appear in the address bar, after the #. That is what makes the browser’s back button step back through the questions, and it lets you bookmark an answer or send it to somebody.

The part after the # is called a fragment, and browsers never send it to the server. It is not in our host’s logs, it is not in the referrer when you click a link out to a platform’s policy, and it does not reach us in any other way. This was chosen over the more usual ? style of address for exactly that reason: a ? would have put your answers in a log file.

Two things follow from it, and you should know both. Anyone you send the link to can read what you answered, because the answers are the link. And the address stays in your browser history, so on a shared or work computer somebody could find it there. It is scrambled rather than written out in plain words, which stops it being read over your shoulder, but that is not the same as being secret and we do not claim it is. Pressing “Check something else” clears it.

Nothing else survives. Reload without a link and every answer disappears, and no answer is saved on your device or anywhere else.

Cookies and storage

No cookies, and no fingerprinting of your device or browser.

One thing is kept on your device, in local storage. When the AI use step offers you a choice between answering one question at a time and seeing them all at once, your choice is remembered so the step opens the way you left it. It records the word guided or all and nothing else: not what you picked, not what you were told, and nothing that could identify you. It never leaves your browser, and clearing your browser data removes it. This is covered in more detail on the cookies page.

Third parties

The page loads nothing from anyone else. Typefaces are served from this site rather than from a font service, and every icon is embedded in the page itself. No request leaves for another company while you are using the checker.

That is a deliberate choice. Embedding a third-party font or script would transmit your IP address to that company on every visit. A German court held in 2022 that doing so without consent breached the GDPR. It would be a poor look for a tool about EU compliance to leak its visitors’ addresses.

Your results do contain links to official sources and to platform help pages. Those are ordinary links: nothing is sent until you choose to follow one, and once you do, that site’s own privacy policy applies.

The one thing that is recorded

Like almost every website, this one is served by a hosting company, and that company keeps standard server logs. Those logs typically include your IP address, the page requested, the time, and your browser’s user-agent string. They are created automatically as part of delivering the page, they are not read or analysed by us, and they are not linked to anything you answered.

Under the GDPR an IP address counts as personal data, so this is the one place where personal data is processed. The legal basis is legitimate interest: operating and securing the site. The host is [hosting provider name and country] and their retention period is [retention period].

Your rights

Because we hold nothing about you, most data-protection rights have nothing to act on: there is no record to access, correct, export or erase. The exception is the server logs described above, which are held by the hosting provider.

Changes

If this ever changes, whether analytics are added or anything begins to be stored, this page will say so before it happens, and the date below will change. We will not quietly start collecting things.
